Sultan Abdul hamid (1842-1918) was one of the last great Khalifah's of the Ottoman Caliphate from 1876 to 1909. During a period of intellectual and political decline, Abdul hamid took it upon himself to revive the importance and power of the caliphate throughout the Muslim world. During the Tanzimat Era, the Ottoman provinces of Serbia, Greece, Wallachia, Modova, Abkhazia, Bulgaria and Algeria were all lost to Eruopean encroachment or nationalism. abdul hamid decided to emphasize Islam as the dominant uniting factor among his subjects he places much emphasis on the holy sites of Makkah and Madinah. In the 1800s, a building program cmmenced in the holy cities, with hospitals, barracks and infrastructure. The Ka'aaba itself and the Masjid al-Haram that surrounded it were also renovated with a modern water system that helped reduce the severity of floods.In 1900, Abdul hamid commenced the beginning of the Hejaz Railway. It began in Istanbul and traveled through Syria, Palestine and the Arabian desert, ending in Madinah. He Ensured that railways were smaller then standard European ones so that if Istanbul were to ever fall to Eruopean Imperialists, their trains would not be able easily invade Makkah and Madinah. Sultan Abdul hamid has been lauded for his political talent by his contemporaries German Emperor Kaiser Wihelm II has stated that “ I have learned the game of politics from Abdul hamid.” German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck said regarding Abdul hamid. “ Of all the intelligence in Europe, 90% is in Abdul hamid, 5% in myself, and 5% in everyone else.” In the late 1800s, Theodor Herzl, the found of Zionism, personally requested from Abdul hamid II special permission to settle in Palestine, In exchange for 150 million pounds of gold. “Advice Dr. Herzl not to take any further steps in his project. I cannot give away a handful of the soil of this land as it is not my own; it belongs to the Islamic Nation who have fought for the sake of this land and watered it with their blood. The Jews may keep their millions; if the Islamic Caliphate is one day destroyed then they would be able to take Palestine without a price. While I am alive I would rather push a sword into my body than see the land of Palestine is taken away from the Islamic State. This will never happen. I will not start cutting our bodies while we are alive” ( The Diary of Theodore Henzl, Vol.1). Abdul hamid was the last of the Ottoman sultans who had any real power. He was overthrown in 1909 by the Western-Educated liberal secular group, the Young Turks. His achievements and the resurgence of power were built upon a desire to revive the Khilafah through Islam – that is why he is still remembered to this day – and why he was Villfled in Western Media. Abdul hamid died in Istanbul in 1918, and was buried in a mausoleum along with Sultans Mahmud II and Abdul aziz near Sultan ahmet Square.
